Following the Mediterranean diet is linked to better mental and physical health
Updated
Abstract
An increase of 5 units in the Mediterranean diet score is directly associated with changes of 0.74 units in men's and 1.15 units in women's mental health scores.
- Adherence to the Mediterranean diet may be linked to improved self-perceived mental health.
- A significant direct association was found between the Mediterranean diet score and self-reported mental and physical health for both men and women.
- In men, the association between the diet and physical health scores remained stable after adjusting for confounding factors.
- In women, the association with physical health scores was attenuated after adjustments.
- The study analyzed data from 3,910 men and 4,285 women aged 35-74 in Gerona, Spain, collected in 2000 and 2005.
