Melatonin helps elite soccer players reset their sleep cycle faster after a 12-hour westward flight

Updated

Abstract

The mean resynchronization rate of sleep-wake cycle after a 12-time-zone flight was 2.13 ± 0.88 days.

  • Melatonin treatment, light exposure, and physical exercise were used to aid resynchronization.
  • No significant changes in subjective sleep parameters were observed compared to preflight assessments, except for increased awakenings on days 1 and 3 and decreased sleep latency on days 2, 6, and 8.
  • Sleep quality and morning alertness in Tokyo were significantly correlated with preflight levels of a melatonin metabolite.
  • The resynchronization rate was significantly shorter than the expected minimum of 6 days for such a time shift.
