Abstract
Resmetirom and semaglutide are now FDA-approved for patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis and significant liver fibrosis.
- Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a progressive form of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
- Lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes, exercise, and weight loss have been the traditional approach to treating MASLD/MASH.
- Resmetirom acts as a thyroid hormone β-receptor agonist, while semaglutide functions as a glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonist.
- Both medications are associated with treating patients who have clinically significant hepatic fibrosis (F2-F3 fibrosis).
- Future therapies may enable more personalized treatment strategies for MASH and related conditions.
