Metabolic problems linked to fatty liver disease, multiple heart and metabolism conditions, and risk of death: evidence from the UK Biobank

Updated

Abstract

Over a median follow-up of 11.7 years, MASLD was linked to significantly higher risks of single cardiometabolic disease (CMD), cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), and all-cause mortality.

  • MASLD is associated with a nearly double risk of single CMD compared to those without MASLD (HR 1.94).
  • The presence of MASLD is linked to more than three times the risk of CMM (HR 3.40).
  • All-cause mortality risk increases by 21% in individuals with MASLD (HR 1.21).
  • MASLD also raises the risk of progressing from single CMD to CMM by 95% (HR 1.95).
  • Increasing severity of MASLD correlates with escalating risks of CMD, CMM, and mortality.
  • Transitions from CMM to mortality do not show an independent association with MASLD.
