Detailed tissue analysis shows ongoing virus and immune problems in long COVID colorectal tissue

Updated

Abstract

In a cohort of 44 individuals with Long COVID, evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 may persist in the gastrointestinal tract, contributing to chronic inflammation.

  • Long COVID is characterized by persistent symptoms following COVID-19 infection, with the gastrointestinal tract as a significant site of viral persistence.
  • Tissue analysis indicates that SARS-CoV-2 may activate immune signaling pathways that lead to chronic inflammation.
  • Downregulation of immune pathways responsible for clearing infected cells was observed in colorectal tissue.
  • Peripheral blood signatures associated with immune dysregulation are notably weaker compared to those found in tissue.
  • These findings suggest a need for therapeutic strategies aimed at enhancing immune response to address ongoing viral presence.
