Abstract

A total of 81 trials involving 5576 participants were reviewed to assess the effects of music interventions for cancer patients.

  • Music interventions may significantly reduce anxiety in adults with cancer, showing an average reduction of 7.73 units on the anxiety scale.
  • There is a moderately strong association between music interventions and reduced depression in adults, with a standardized mean difference of -0.41.
  • Music interventions could increase hope in adults, with an average increase of 3.19 units on the hope index, though this is based on limited studies.
  • A moderate pain-reducing effect of music interventions was observed, with a standardized mean difference of -0.67.
  • Inconsistencies were noted in the effect of music medicine interventions compared to music therapy interventions on psychological outcomes.
  • Due to a limited number of studies, conclusions regarding the impact of music interventions on pediatric cancer patients remain uncertain.
