Music and singing to help brain development in premature babies

Updated

Abstract

A total of 25 trials involving 1,532 infants and 691 parents assessed the effects of music and vocal interventions on preterm infants.

  • Music and vocal interventions do not increase oxygen saturation in preterm infants during or after the intervention.
  • The interventions probably do not significantly affect infant development as measured by cognitive, motor, or language scores.
  • Music therapy may not reduce parental anxiety or postnatal depression.
  • There is moderate-certainty evidence that these interventions reduce heart rates in preterm infants both during and after the intervention.
  • No adverse effects from music and vocal interventions were reported in the studies.
