Narrative and cognitive behavioral therapy improve mental well-being and cancer outcomes after major rectal surgery

Updated

Abstract

At 24 months, disease-free survival was 86.8% in the intervention group compared to 72.2% in controls.

  • The intervention group experienced significantly greater reductions in depression and anxiety scores.
  • Improvements in stoma-related quality of life and sexual function were observed in the intervention group.
  • Lower levels of systemic inflammatory markers were noted on postoperative day 7 among those receiving the intervention.
  • Overall survival at 24 months was 91.5% for the intervention group compared to 79.4% for controls.
  • These findings suggest a potential link between psychosocial intervention and improved oncologic outcomes.
