General anesthesia using nitrous oxide compared to methods without nitrous oxide

Abstract

A total of 13,872 adult participants were included in the analysis of nitrous oxide-based anaesthesia outcomes.

  • Nitrous oxide-based anaesthesia techniques were associated with a higher incidence of pulmonary atelectasis, with an odds ratio of 1.57.
  • There were no observed differences in the inhospital case fatality rate or the incidence of pneumonia, myocardial infarction, stroke, severe nausea and vomiting, venous thromboembolism, or wound infection.
  • The length of hospital stay was not affected by nitrous oxide-based anaesthesia techniques.
  • The quality of evidence was rated as high for pulmonary atelectasis and myocardial infarction, moderate for several outcomes, and low for pneumonia and severe nausea and vomiting.
  • Avoiding nitrous oxide may be advisable for patients with pre-existing poor pulmonary function or those at high risk for postoperative nausea and vomiting.
