Abstract

70% of dementia cases worldwide are attributed to Alzheimer's disease (AD).

  • Tau hyperphosphorylation and amyloid-β plaque accumulation are core pathological features of AD.
  • Genetic predisposition, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation may contribute to the onset and progression of AD.
  • Dysregulation of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in AD patients is linked to amyloid production, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
  • Multiple microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) directly regulate processes such as mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis in AD models.
  • Specific ncRNAs, including miR-140 and lncRNA NEAT1, are associated with mitophagy regulation, while others influence mitochondrial dynamics and apoptosis pathways.
  • Current evidence suggests that ncRNAs may serve as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in AD, although further investigation is needed.
