Non-Hormone Drug Treatments for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Teenagers: A Systematic Review

Updated

Abstract

Nineteen studies involving 744 adolescents evaluated non-hormonal treatments for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

  • Metformin alone resulted in a modest reduction in body mass index (1-2 kg/m²) and improved insulin resistance by 25%.
  • Up to 91% of participants experienced restored menstrual cycles with metformin treatment.
  • SPIOMET significantly improved ovulatory function and reduced body hair growth, while also normalizing inflammatory markers without significant weight change.
  • Combining flutamide with metformin led to notable improvements in anti-androgenic and metabolic outcomes compared to hormonal contraceptives.
  • No studies were found on the effectiveness of GLP-1 receptor agonists in adolescents with PCOS.
