New Diabetes Drugs and Risk of Kidney Injury After Heart Procedures in Diabetic Patients

Abstract

NAD treatment was associated with a significantly reduced incidence of CA-AKI at 4.1% compared to 8.5% in standard therapies.

  • Contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) is defined as an increase in serum creatinine of ≥0.3 mg/dl or >50% from baseline within 48 to 72 hours after contrast exposure.
  • 293 diabetic patients receiving novel antidiabetic agents (NAD) were matched with 293 diabetic patients not on NAD during percutaneous coronary revascularization (PCI).
  • Both multivariate and adjusted regression analyses indicated NAD therapy as an independent predictor of reduced CA-AKI risk.
  • SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists showed lower CA-AKI incidence compared to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors.
