Nudix hydrolase 23 controls plant carotenoid production by modifying proteins

Abstract

Overexpression of Nudix hydrolase 23 (NUDX23) increases carotenoid production in Arabidopsis by enhancing the protein levels of phytoene synthase (PSY) and geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase (GGPPS).

  • NUDX23 is highly expressed in the leaves of Arabidopsis.
  • Knockout of NUDX23 significantly reduces protein levels of PSY and GGPPS, leading to decreased carotenoid accumulation.
  • NUDX23 interacts directly with PSY and GGPPS in chloroplasts, stabilizing these proteins within a large enzyme complex.
  • The assembly of the PSY-GGPPS enzyme complex is dependent on NUDX23.
