How a key enzyme affects seed lifespan through compounds made from β-carotene

Updated

Abstract

Seeds from PSY overexpression lines exhibited significantly enhanced longevity with low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

  • Carotenoid metabolites may play a crucial role in prolonging seed lifespan.
  • Phytoene synthase (PSY) modulates seed storability in Arabidopsis under aging conditions.
  • Seeds with high levels of β-carotene and its derived apocarotenoids, such as β-cyclocitral and β-ionone, showed improved longevity.
  • The presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is associated with reduced seed viability in psy mutants.
  • TIP2;2, an aquaporin protein, is differentially abundant in seeds with varying PSY expression levels and is linked to seed longevity.
