Only 25% of primary care providers correctly identified the body mass index criteria for anti-obesity medication prescription.

  • Participants predominantly included Internal Medicine trainees, comprising 60.4% of the surveyed group.
  • Most primary care providers accurately recognized common weight-related health issues and the potential improvement with over 10% weight loss.
  • Nearly two-thirds (64%) reported prescribing anti-obesity medications, with a preference for injectable agents over older oral medications.
  • Knowledge of side effects and insurance coverage were identified as factors influencing the prescribing of anti-obesity medications.
  • Over 50% of primary care providers cited time constraints and a lack of training or knowledge as barriers to effective obesity management.
