Obesity surgery

Comparing Two Types of Gastric Bypass Surgery for Obesity: Results from the YOMEGA and Taiwan Studies

Updated

Abstract

The Y-study recruited 234 patients with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 43.9 and age of 43.5 years.

  • OAGB is associated with easier technical execution and potentially better glycemic control compared to RYGB.
  • Both procedures resulted in similar weight loss at 2 years post-surgery, but OAGB showed a greater reduction in HbA1c (-2.3% vs. -1.3%; p = 0.025).
  • OAGB was linked to a higher risk of malnutrition, with a lower hemoglobin level observed at 2 years compared to RYGB.
  • Bile reflux occurred in 16% of OAGB patients, though it did not affect quality of life or revision rates.
  • A trend was noted for RYGB patients to report more abdominal pain than those undergoing OAGB.
