Updated

Abstract

A total of 1600 patients were enrolled in a trial comparing spinal and general anesthesia for hip fracture surgery.

  • 73.5% of patients reported severe pain during the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Patients receiving spinal anesthesia experienced greater worst pain in the first 24 hours compared to those receiving general anesthesia, with a mean difference of 0.40.
  • At 60 days, prescription analgesic use was higher in the spinal anesthesia group (25%) compared to the general anesthesia group (18.8%).
  • Satisfaction with care was similar between both anesthesia groups.
  • Severe pain is common following hip fractures.
