Abstract
Daily locomotor activity patterns of Drosophila virilis differ significantly from those of Drosophila melanogaster.
- D. virilis adults exhibit primarily photophase activity under light:dark cycles, becoming arrhythmic or weakly rhythmic in constant conditions.
- The activity patterns of D. virilis resemble those of the Pdf(01) mutant of D. melanogaster.
- Endogenous expression of the pigment-dispersing factor (Pdf) neuropeptide is not detected in the s-LN(v)-like neurons of D. virilis adults.
- The lack of DvPdf in the s-LN(v)-like neurons may contribute to the Pdf(01)-like behavioral traits observed in D. virilis.
- Cis-regulatory elements of the DvPdf transgene can direct expression in all endogenous Pdf neurons, including s-LN(v)'s, in a D. melanogaster host.
- Differences in Pdf transcription regulation between the two species are associated with the establishment of species-specific locomotor activity patterns.
