Drugs that may slow immune aging and chronic inflammation: senolytics, senomorphics, and new treatments

Updated

Abstract

Ageing is associated with progressive immune dysfunction characterized by immunosenescence.

  • Immunosenescence affects both innate and adaptive immunity.
  • Ageing leads to reduced production of nave T and B cells.
  • There is an accumulation of senescent immune cells with age.
  • The ability to recognize pathogens is impaired in older individuals.
  • A persistent low-grade inflammatory state, known as inflammaging, occurs even without infection.
  • These changes contribute to increased susceptibility to infections and poor vaccine responses.
