How Bread Wheat and Its Wild Relatives Respond Physically and at the Molecular Level to Drought

Updated

Abstract

Drought treatments significantly affected all measured traits except guaiacol peroxidases across four wheat species.

  • Moderate drought stress led to reductions in carotenoid content, net photosynthesis rate, and stomatal conductance.
  • Under severe drought, physiological traits and shoot dry matter generally declined, while biochemical activity increased.
  • A strong correlation was observed between superoxide dismutase activity and dehydrin gene expression under both drought conditions.
  • Ae. speltoides and Ae. tauschii showed the highest resilience to drought stress, indicating superior adaptability.
  • The findings suggest that wild relatives of wheat may provide valuable genetic resources for enhancing drought tolerance.
