Wearable Device Sensors for Managing Ongoing Long COVID Symptoms

Updated

Abstract

A total of 10 different wearable devices were used to monitor long COVID symptoms across 11 studies involving 3 to 17,667 participants.

  • Wearable devices captured key metrics such as heart rate variability, body temperature, sleep, and physical activity.
  • Smartwatches were the most commonly used devices, alongside fitness trackers equipped with sensors for heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate.
  • Four of the wearable devices were approved by the Food and Drug Administration, indicating a level of reliability in the physiological data collected.
  • The studies varied in design, including both observational and interventional trials, primarily conducted in the United States and Europe.
  • Continuous and personalized monitoring through wearables may help track persistent symptoms of long COVID, but further research is needed to validate long-term efficacy.
