How well wearable devices track patients continuously in hospitals: a systematic review

Updated

Abstract

Fourteen observational studies evaluated the use of wearable devices for monitoring hospitalized patients.

  • Nine different commercial wearables assessed various health parameters including heart rate, sleep duration, and blood pressure.
  • Only six studies validated their wearable results against a reference device, revealing considerable risk of bias due to low patient numbers.
  • Heart rate and sleep duration showed the most evidence for accurate monitoring during hospitalization.
  • Many validated devices produced inaccurate readings with wide limits of agreement compared to established standards.
  • The mean patient completion rate for the wearables across all studies was over 90%.
