Links between blood levels of trimethylamine N-oxide, choline, carnitine, and betaine, inflammation and heart health markers, and gut bacteria in a diverse group study

Updated

Abstract

Median plasma TMAO concentration was 3.05 μmol/L.

  • Higher plasma concentrations of TMAO and carnitine, and lower levels of betaine, are associated with increased insulin resistance.
  • Choline levels correlate with higher systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein, and lower HDL cholesterol.
  • TMAO is linked to the abundance of 13 specific bacterial genera, including Prevotella and Mitsuokella, among others.
  • The findings suggest that TMAO and its precursors may play a role in inflammatory and cardiometabolic risk pathways.
