Active compounds in Polygala tenuifolia root extract and how they may help treat bronchitis, studied through chemical analysis and lab tests

Abstract

Thirty-seven compounds were identified in Polygala tenuifolia liquid extract (PLE), with twelve quantified as potential treatments for bronchitis.

  • Oral administration of PLE at doses of 0.6 and 0.12 mg/kg for 7 days reduced cough frequency and inflammation in a mouse model.
  • A network pharmacology analysis revealed 57 gene targets associated with PLE's effects on bronchitis.
  • The PI3K/AKT and MAPK signaling pathways were identified as the primary pathways modulated by PLE.
  • In vitro studies showed PLE significantly reduced levels of inflammatory markers such as COX-2 and IL-6 in stimulated cells.
  • The five core components of PLE responsible for its effects include tenuifolin and polygalaxanthone Ⅲ.
