How the timing and amount of carbs before exercise affect high-intensity workout performance

Abstract

Ingestion of a 6.4% carbohydrate/electrolyte sports drink 30 minutes before exercise resulted in a mean exercise capacity of 9.0 ± 1.9 minutes.

  • Timing of carbohydrate intake may influence exercise capacity in short-duration high-intensity tasks.
  • Carbohydrate ingestion 30 minutes prior to exercise produced superior performance compared to a placebo or delayed carbohydrate intake.
  • Exercise capacity following a 2% carbohydrate solution (9.2 ± 2.1 minutes) was higher than the 0% solution (8.2 ± 0.7 minutes), with a trend observed for the 12% solution (8.0 ± 1.3 minutes).
  • The concentration of carbohydrate solutions may require further investigation to fully understand its effect on exercise performance.
