Carbohydrate loading 48 hours before a practice squash match

Abstract

A high carbohydrate diet (11.1 g·kg-1) significantly increased carbohydrate oxidation and improved performance during simulated squash matches.

  • Respiratory exchange ratio was significantly higher after the high carbohydrate diet (0.80) compared to the low carbohydrate diet (0.76).
  • Players completed the games faster after the high carbohydrate diet, taking an average of 2340 seconds versus 2416 seconds with the low carbohydrate diet.
  • Blood glucose levels were significantly elevated in the high carbohydrate condition.
  • Lactate concentrations also increased significantly following the high carbohydrate diet.
  • These findings indicate that a high carbohydrate intake prior to competition may enhance both metabolic responses and physical performance.
