Reduced activity in thinking areas of the brain when shift workers see sleep-related images

Abstract

Shift workers demonstrated significantly lower activity in the dorsomedial and lateral prefrontal cortex when viewing sleep-related pictures compared to healthy controls.

  • 44 shift workers and 37 healthy controls participated in the study.
  • Shift workers showed reduced brain activation in areas associated with attention when processing sleep-related stimuli.
  • Dorsomedial prefrontal cortex activity was negatively correlated with self-reported sleep problems such as insomnia and fatigue.
  • Lateral prefrontal cortex activity correlated strongly with measured 24-hour rest-activity rhythm parameters.
  • Decreased prefrontal cortex activation in shift workers may indicate impaired attentional control regarding sleep and increased focus on distressing sleep-related thoughts.
