Using statin drugs before heart surgery in adults

Updated

Abstract

Pooled analysis of eight randomized controlled trials involving 5592 participants indicates that preoperative statin treatment may not significantly impact postoperative short-term mortality.

  • Statin treatment before cardiac surgery may result in little to no difference in the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.
  • Statins probably result in little to no difference in the occurrence of myocardial infarction.
  • There may be little to no effect of statins on the incidence of atrial fibrillation and stroke.
  • The impact of statins on renal failure remains very uncertain.
  • Statins probably do not affect the length of intensive care unit stay and overall hospital stay.
