Patterns of Type 2 Diabetes Medicines Prescribed in the US from 2019 to 2024

Updated

Abstract

Among 9327 patients, 30 distinct prescribing trajectory clusters for type 2 diabetes were identified.

  • Prescribing trajectories were categorized into five main types: monotherapy, dual therapy, complex therapy, variant therapy, and GLP-1 RA-based trajectories.
  • There were notable variations in treatment intensification patterns, body mass index (BMI), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) changes across these clusters.
  • In GLP-1 RA-based trajectories, significant reductions in both BMI and HbA1c were observed, particularly among patients with higher baseline BMI.
  • Younger patients and those with higher baseline BMI were more likely to receive GLP-1 RA prescriptions.
  • Asian and Hispanic patients had lower odds of being in early GLP-1 RA transition trajectories compared to non-Hispanic White patients.
