How common and when non-movement symptoms appear in natural rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder

Abstract

Hyposmia occurred in 52.3% of patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder, compared to 20.0% in matched controls.

  • Constipation was reported in 56.8% of patients, significantly higher than the 20.0% in controls.
  • Patients indicated that their first perceived symptom was REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in 38.6% of cases, followed by hyposmia in 15.9%.
  • Memory problems were more frequently reported by patients, with a trend toward lower scores on cognitive assessments.
  • Depression and hypersomnia were not found to be more frequent in patients compared to controls.
  • The perceived timeline of nonmotor symptoms varied widely among patients, suggesting heterogeneous underlying changes.
