Behavior and growth changes caused by psychedelics in zebrafish: a systematic review

Updated

Abstract

Thirteen articles were reviewed on the effects of psychedelics in zebrafish, focusing on behavioral changes and developmental toxicity.

  • Overall, psychedelics did not cause major physical abnormalities in embryo-larvae.
  • High concentrations of ayahuasca led to edemas and increased mortality.
  • Ibogaine, MDMA, and LSD were linked to movement issues when exposure occurred during development.
  • DMT, psilocybin, and psilocin may have anxiety-reducing effects on larvae, while LSD, MDMA, mescaline, and noribogaine could lower anxiety in adult zebrafish.
  • Psychedelics may be safe at low concentrations in zebrafish, but the impact on neurodevelopment in offspring remains unclear.
