REM sleep behavior disorder in Japanese Parkinson’s patients studied using a screening questionnaire

Updated

Abstract

Probable or possible REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) was detected in 31.1% of 469 non-demented Japanese Parkinson's disease patients.

  • RBD is significantly associated with longer Parkinson's disease duration and higher severity ratings.
  • Patients with RBD exhibited more motor fluctuations and required higher doses of levodopa.
  • Severe constipation was more common in Parkinson's patients with RBD compared to those without.
  • RBD symptoms preceded the onset of Parkinson's motor symptoms in 39.0% of patients, with a median interval of 17.5 years.
