  • Genetically engineered Lactococcus lactis secretes glucagon-like peptide-1 for potential type 2 diabetes treatment.
  • A protective shield enabled the engineered bacteria to survive harsh gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Once metabolized by gut bacteria, the shield's components helped the bacteria colonize the intestine.
  • The treatment improved glucose and lipid balance, repaired organ damage, and positively influenced gut bacteria.
  • Multi-omics analysis indicated intervention in liver signaling pathways related to fat metabolism and oxidative processes.
