Retatrutide's effects on learning and memory in male rats with diabetes

Abstract

Retatrutide is associated with a partial attenuation of diabetes-related cognitive impairments in a rat model.

  • Streptozotocin-induced diabetes resulted in persistent high blood sugar, significant weight loss, and impaired learning and memory.
  • Diabetic rats treated with Retatrutide displayed better performance in the Morris Water Maze compared to untreated diabetic rats.
  • Retatrutide treatment led to a notable reduction in the inflammatory marker TNF-α in the hippocampus.
  • While Retatrutide reduced blood glucose levels, it did not stop weight loss in diabetic rats.
  • The effects of Retatrutide on cognitive function were task-dependent and did not fully normalize memory performance.
  • Retatrutide alone did not enhance behavioral outcomes in non-diabetic rats, though it increased BDNF and CREB mRNA levels.
