Risk of Retinal Vein Blockage with Two Diabetes Drug Types in Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract

Among 79,486 matched participants, GLP-1 receptor agonist use is associated with a lower risk of retinal vein occlusion.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists are associated with a hazard ratio of 0.73 for retinal vein occlusion compared to DPP-4 inhibitors.
  • The association for branch retinal vein occlusion is even stronger, with a hazard ratio of 0.62 for GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • This lower risk is consistent in patients aged 50 years and older, Black patients, and those using human-analog GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • In high-risk groups, including those with higher baseline HbA1c, increased body mass index, and longer diabetes duration, GLP-1 receptor agonists show a similar protective effect.
