Muscle Breakdown Linked to the Use of Tirzepatide

Updated

Abstract

A 35-year-old female developed severe rhabdomyolysis potentially associated with the use of tirzepatide for weight loss.

  • Rhabdomyolysis resolved after discontinuation of tirzepatide and treatment with intravenous fluids.
  • Muscle biopsy indicated necrotising myopathy as a contributing factor.
  • No other factors were identified that could have led to the rhabdomyolysis.
  • Consideration of GLP-1 agonists as potential contributors to rhabdomyolysis is advised in similar cases.
  • Clinicians should discuss the risks versus benefits of GLP-1 agonists like tirzepatide with patients before prescribing.
