Safety of gaining little or losing weight during pregnancy in women with mild to severe obesity

Updated

Abstract

The study followed 15,760 pregnancies with obesity over a median of 7.9 years.

  • Among pregnancies with class 1 obesity, 13.9% had weight gain below the lower limit of the IOM recommendation.
  • For class 2 obesity, 24.9% had similar low weight gain, while 33.2% of class 3 obesity pregnancies were below the IOM limit.
  • In classes 1 and 2 obesity, weight gain below the IOM recommendation or weight loss did not increase the risk of adverse outcomes.
  • In class 3 obesity, lower weight gain or weight loss was associated with a reduced risk of adverse outcomes.
  • Findings suggest the current IOM lower limit for weight gain may be too high for women with obesity.
