How Salvia miltiorrhiza extract may improve thinking problems caused by long-term sleep loss in rats

Updated

Abstract

Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Danshen, DS) significantly improved cognitive function in rats suffering from chronic sleep deprivation (CSD).

  • CSD induced gut dysbiosis and cognitive dysfunction, characterized by an increase in Firmicutes and Proteobacteria and a decrease in Bacteroidota and Spirochaetota.
  • DS therapy restored the gut microbial community, which was associated with alleviated cognitive impairment.
  • DS administration reduced systemic inflammation by lowering intestinal inflammation and enhancing gut barrier integrity.
  • DS treatment decreased blood-brain barrier and neuronal damage, leading to reduced neuroinflammation in the hippocampus.
  • Mechanistic studies indicated that DS lowered lipopolysaccharide levels, blocking the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway and its pro-inflammatory products.
