New SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.526 found in West Bengal, India

Updated

Abstract

A novel variant of SARS-CoV-2, named B.1.1.526, was identified in India among 129 SARS-CoV-2 strains.

  • The B.1.1.526 variant includes 11 mutations, notably D614G, P681H, and V1230L in the spike glycoprotein.
  • Out of the 129 sequences, 27 also contained the E484K mutation, which is associated with immune evasion.
  • Phylogenetic analysis indicates that this variant emerged from the GR clade, forming a distinct cluster.
  • Geographically, 126 of the sequences were distributed across seven Indian states, with three identified in the USA.
  • The presence of specific mutations may suggest increased transmissibility and infectivity of the novel variant.
