Possible genetic links between schizophrenia and other mental illnesses

Updated

Abstract

A genetically predicted one-log unit increase in schizophrenia risk is associated with a 70.7% increase in the odds of bipolar disorder.

  • Schizophrenia is linked to a 17.4% higher odds of autism spectrum disorders.
  • There is a 14.5% increased risk of alcohol use disorder associated with schizophrenia.
  • A statistically significant but clinically marginal association with depression was observed.
  • No causal relationships were found between schizophrenia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, anorexia nervosa, anxiety disorders, or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Sensitivity analyses supported the findings, with no evidence of reverse causal impacts from the other disorders on schizophrenia.
