Changes in sleep and daily rhythm problems among Hong Kong teenagers from 2011 to 2019

Abstract

The average time in bed for Hong Kong adolescents decreased from 8.38 hours in 2011-2012 to 8.08 hours in 2017-2019.

  • A delay of 0.28 hours in weekday bedtime was observed from 2011-2012 to 2017-2019.
  • Weekend wake-up times advanced by 0.54 hours during the same period.
  • The proportion of adolescents getting less than 8 hours of sleep increased (Odds Ratio = 2.06).
  • Daytime sleepiness increased, with an Odds Ratio of 1.70.
  • A shift towards an evening chronotype was noted, with an Odds Ratio of 1.26.
  • The increase in insomnia disorder was not significant after adjusting for covariates.
