Semaglutide and Hospital Stay Rates in People with Obesity and Heart Disease

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In SELECT, semaglutide reduced hospital admissions and hospital days in adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease without diabetes.

Evidence

This prespecified exploratory analysis of the 17,604-patient SELECT randomized trial found once-weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg versus placebo lowered any-cause admissions (18.3 vs 20.4 per 100 patient-years; MR 0.90) and any-cause hospital days (157.2 vs 176.2 per 100 patient-years; RR 0.89) over a median 41.8 months.

Caveat

Hospitalization was analyzed as an exploratory outcome, so the result is less definitive than the trial's primary cardiovascular endpoint.
