Semaglutide’s impact on heart failure with normal pumping in obese patients compared to placebo

Abstract

Treatment with semaglutide 2.4 mg once weekly resulted in a 43% reduction in C-reactive protein levels in obese patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

  • Semaglutide treatment was associated with a significant decrease in NT-proBNP levels, with reductions of 20.90% and 23.20% in randomized controlled trials and 15.80% in a retrospective cohort.
  • Participants receiving semaglutide experienced weight loss ranging from 9% to 13%, compared to 2% to 7% in the placebo group.
  • Functional improvements were noted, with the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire-Clinical Summary Score increasing by 13 to 16 points in the semaglutide group.
  • The findings indicate that semaglutide may improve biomarkers associated with heart failure and enhance quality of life in patients with HFpEF and obesity.
  • Results should be interpreted cautiously due to the limited number of studies included in the review.
