Thyroid overactivity linked to semaglutide treatment

Updated

Abstract

An average adult patient with hypothyroidism may require 1.6 micrograms of levothyroxine per kilogram of body weight.

  • Weight loss may lead to reduced thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in hypothyroid patients.
  • Hypothyroid patients on levothyroxine who undergo weight loss treatments should be monitored for signs of hyperthyroidism.
  • Iatrogenic hyperthyroidism can occur when the levothyroxine dosage is no longer appropriate due to significant weight loss.
  • The mechanism for iatrogenic hyperthyroidism in these patients is unclear but could involve increased absorption of the medication.
  • A dosage reduction of levothyroxine may be necessary for patients experiencing rapid weight loss from obesity therapies.
