Peptide YY and neuropeptide Y influence emotional behavior differently in male and female mice, in both healthy and inflamed gut conditions

Updated

Abstract

In the absence of colitis, anxiety-like behavior was increased by deletion of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in a test- and sex-dependent manner.

  • Depression-like behavior was enhanced in both NPY and PYY knockout mice regardless of sex.
  • The severity of colitis, measured by colonic inflammation, was reduced in NPY knockout mice but not in PYY knockout mice.
  • Colitis altered anxiety- and depression-related behavior based on sex, genetic background, and testing methods.
  • NPY and PYY may play distinct roles in influencing emotional-affective behavior during gastrointestinal inflammation.
