Abstract

Mice exposed to non-24-hour light-dark cycles showed significant body weight gain compared to the control group.

  • Circadian expression rhythms of core clock genes (Per, Cry, Bmal1) in the brain were lost in groups subjected to non-24-hour cycles.
  • Genes in the brain that lost rhythmicity were significantly enriched in pathways related to metabolism and regulation.
  • The circadian rhythms of key hormones like melatonin and dopamine were disrupted in mice exposed to non-24-hour cycles.
  • Alterations in gut microbiota were observed, including changes in the Firmicutes/Bacteroidota ratio and a loss of gut microbial rhythms.
  • Behavioral changes included increased anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors, along with fatigue, while spatial memory remained unaffected.
