Sleep risk factors change how inflammation relates to type 2 diabetes risk

Updated

Abstract

During a median follow-up of 10.4 years, 14,200 cases of type 2 diabetes (T2D) were identified among 366,746 participants.

  • Higher serum CRP levels are associated with increased risk of T2D, with hazard ratios rising from 1.31 in the second quintile to 2.38 in the highest quintile compared to the lowest group.
  • Significant interactions were found between CRP levels and sleep risk factors, including sleep duration, snoring, and daytime sleepiness.
  • The association between elevated CRP levels and T2D incidence is more pronounced in individuals with high-risk sleep factors.
