Slow brain waves and sleep spindles working together predict memory improvement overnight in older adults

Abstract

Twenty-five older adults participated in a two-night study examining brain activity during sleep after learning.

  • Cross-frequency coupling (CFC) between slow oscillations and spindles during non-rapid-eye-movement sleep is associated with memory consolidation.
  • Changes in coupling strength between nights were stable and not linked to memory consolidation outcomes.
  • A shift in coupling phase towards the up-state peak after learning predicted better memory consolidation.
  • Associations between coupling phase closer to the up-state peak and memory consolidation may be influenced by the strength of coupling.
