Whole-night rocking aligns natural brain rhythms and improves sleep and memory

Updated

Abstract

Continuous rocking stimulation during sleep strengthens deep sleep by enhancing NREM stage 3 duration.

  • Rocking stimulation shortened the latency to non-REM sleep and improved sleep maintenance.
  • Increased duration of NREM stage 3 and fewer arousals were observed with rocking compared to a stationary night.
  • Rocking was associated with an increase in sleep oscillations, including slow oscillations and both slow and fast spindles.
  • Overnight memory consolidation was enhanced during the rocking night, correlating with an increase in fast spindles.
  • Temporal clustering of spindles and slow oscillations was noted in relation to the rocking cycle.
