Abstract
The coincidence of spindle activity and slow oscillations during sleep is significantly associated with memory consolidation.
- Indices of the interplay between slow oscillations (0.16-1.25 Hz) and spindle activity (12-16 Hz) during non-rapid eye movement sleep were analyzed in 20 healthy adults.
- A significant correlation was found between the maximum amplitude of spindles coinciding with the up-state of slow oscillations and declarative memory consolidation (r = .65, p = .013).
- The overall strength of phase-amplitude coupling was correlated with procedural memory consolidation (r = .45, p = .04).
- Preliminary findings suggest that the coordinated interplay of these neural activities may facilitate memory consolidation.
